P2P Measure for Audio Solutions
The Leica DISTO S910 was introduced in 2015 as the only laser distance meter capable of 3D measurements. Unlike traditional methods such as “Pythagorean measurements,” which had limitations in accuracy and constraints, the S910 features groundbreaking solutions like “P2P measurements” and “S910 DXF capture”. These innovations allow for flexible measurements as long as laser beams can be projected. P2P measurements are not only used for site surveys and architectural planning but also find applications across various industries. Recently, we visited D&B Audio Technik Japan Co., Ltd. in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, to learn how they leverage Leica DISTO measurements within their own solutions.
d&b ArrayCalc Simulation Software
d&b audiotechnik is an audio solutions company headquartered in Backnang, a suburb near Stuttgart, Germany. They specialize in manufacturing and selling professional audio equipment. You might wonder how laser distance meters are used for installing sound equipment. Before adopting the Leica DISTO S910, the Japanese subsidiary D&B Audio Technik Japan Co., Ltd. relied on the Leica DISTO D510. Not only did they use architectural drawings, but they also input actual measurements from the D510, including stage and seating dimensions, into the d&b ArrayCalc simulation software. After plotting speakers in the space, the software performs sound pressure simulations. This allows for thorough preparation before events. Additionally, at the venue, they use the D510’s built-in tilt sensor to verify speaker centering. The simulation process is highly sophisticated and effective.

Immersive Sound
The Leica DISTO S910 was initially known within the company due to its use by German engineers. However, it wasn’t until a training session in Singapore in 2023 that its practical benefits were fully explored, leading to its adoption in Japan. The d&b Soundscape, an immersive audio system by d&b audiotechnik, offers advanced immersion. To achieve this, meticulous system design is crucial. During our discussion, we learned that speaker placement plays a vital role, and adjustments are necessary based on distance. The 3D coordinates measured by the S910 are instrumental in these simulations.

Data Transfer
The d&b ArrayCalc simulation software allows input of 3D coordinates. After measuring with the Leica DISTO S910, you can export the results as a .csv file using DISTO transfer (Windows data transfer software). Then, while comparing values in Excel, manually input them into ArrayCalc. This process ensures that after speaker placement, re-measurement with the S910, and feedback to the software, the signal processor can accurately reproduce sound.
As an aside, while discussing the workflow, I noticed that manual input was being used. With DISTO transfer, you can configure the data format to output only the x, y, and z coordinates. By setting it to transfer in the order of ArrayCalc tabs, automation becomes possible. As a result, a streamlined process without manual input was established. Although the DISTO S910 P2P package has been discontinued, the new DISTO X6 P2P package also supports similar measurements.

d&b Soundscape
d&b Soundscapeis the first instance in Japan where Leica Geosystems' laser rangefinder 3D coordinates have been utilized. Currently, it has been installed in two locations in Japan and has been used in numerous other applications.
